Agenda

ANTICIPATED EVENT TYPES

PLENARY LECTURES: A number of plenary lectures will be given on a diversity of topics, some of general interest to pragmaticians, others directly related to the special topic of this edition of the International Pragmatics Conferences.

Plenary lectures will include:

Rukmini BHAYA NAIR (Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India), Pragmatics, pragmatism & the postcolonial

Robyn CARSTON (University College London), Pragmatic inference: Reflective or reflexive?

Steven DAVIS (Carleton Univ., Ottawa), Demonstratives and understanding

Charles GOODWIN (Univ. of California at Los Angeles), Multi-modal action in discourse

Clotilde PONTECORVO (Univ. of Roma ‘La Sapienza’), From talking to reasoning

Marina SBISÀ (Univ. of Trieste), How to read Austin

And there will be a plenary session organized by:

Paolo BOUQUET (Univ. of Trento) & Oliviero STOCK (IRST), Computational pragmatics; invited guest speaker in this session: Wolfgang WAHLSTER (Univ. des Saarlandes)

LECTURE SESSIONS: Regular lecture sessions (20-minute presentations followed by 5 minutes for discussion and allowing 5 minutes for switching between sessions). A distinction will be made between special topic sessions and general interest sessions. Authors who prefer this option may present their work as a poster rather than a lecture.

PANELS: Panels take the form of a series of closely related lectures on a specific topic, which may or may not be directly related to the special topic of the conference. They may consist of one, two or three units of 120 minutes. Within each panel unit an average of four 20-minute presentations are given consecutively; the rest of the period may be taken up by an introduction, open discussion, comments by a discussant or discussants, or any combination of these. Panels are composed of contributions invited by panel organizers, combined with individually submitted papers when judged appropriate by the Conference Committee in consultation with the panel organizers. All panel contributions, even when invited directly by panel organizers, have to be submitted in accordance with the same rules (see ‘Call for papers’) and are reviewed anonymously. Typically, written versions or extensive outlines of  all panel contributions should be available to the other contributors before the conference in order to facilitate discussion.
A number of panels are already being planned. What follows is a tentative list of panel organizers and topics. The list is not restrictive; i.e. additional panels may be proposed (see ‘Call for papers’). Nor is the organization of the following ‘panels in preparation’ guaranteed. [Note: Prospective participants who think their work fits in with one of the planned panels, may contact the organizer to have their paper submitted as part of that panel; without agreement from the organizer(s), however, the submission process does not allow linking to a specific panel.]
